The Chili Open Gala and Golf Classic

History
Although the Sugar House Rotary Club Chili Open debut occurred on February 29, 1992, the concept of a Chili Open Golf Classic began in Ohio in 1976, when the late Joe Spoonster, Executive Director of the Vocational Developmental Center for the Handicapped in Akron, and Cleveland, Ohio, received a telephone call from an acquaintance who asked him if he had ever played "Crazy Golf." Crazy Golf is a northern Illinois tradition of driving golf balls as far as possible over a frozen lake. using the idea of Crazy Golf as a catalyst, Spoonster hit upon the idea as a way to raise funds for his center.
Since that first event, RC Willey has continued to be their Title Sponsor. Frank Layden has joined them as their "lifetime" Honorary Chairman. They moved their location to Wheeler Farm and have been there to the present event. And they have snow and ice about seventy percent of the time. An annual dinner and action was also added to the event, which has increased the fun and participation. From $36,000 raised in 1992, they raised over $315,000 in 2005, and their total revenues over the last 14 years are almost $2,400,000.

Honorary Chairman
Frank Layden has once again accepted our invitation to be Honorary Chairman of the Chili Open Golf Classic. He is one of the most recognized and respected members of the basketball community.
Community involvement is a way of life for Frank and his wife Barbara as they lend their support to worthwhile community causes in the Salt Lake area. Frank says that: "The Chili Open is a fun wintertime golf classic and a proven charitable fund raiser."
