Cancer Wellness House Programs

for Children and Adults

For Everyone New to the House:

 

Newcomer's Meeting: Join us for a tour of our facility and an introduction to our weekly and monthly groups and programs. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk to a Cancer  Wellness House representative about your cancer experience, your needs and interests, and ask any questions you have. 

Mondays, 5:00 -5:30 p.m.

 

Support Groups:

 

Wellness Support Group: Open to newly-diagnosed cancer patients and those whose cancers are in remission or have recurred. An opportunity for members to share their experiences with others while addressing a wide range of topics including treatment decisions and side-effects, relationships with others, role changes, uncertainties, spirituality, and family communication. Ongoing. Facilitated by John Conlee, PhD, LCSW. Wednesdays, 5:30 –7:00 p.m. Group runs on a 10-week cycle, call CWH to register.

 

Prostate Cancer Support Group for Patients and Spouses: Support group for prostate patients and their partners to increase understanding of diagnosis and treatment, diminish  fears associated with treatment through education and social opportunities, encourage communication about side effects and intimacy. Facilitated by Valerie Lambert, LCSW  & Lo Pennelton, LCSW.  Tuesdays, 7:00 –8:00 p.m.

 

Caregiver's Support Group:

An ongoing group perfect for families,  friends, and caregivers, this group will help you find new ways to take care of yourself while supporting a loved one with cancer. Topics addressed include common emotions, stress management, and practical tips for caregivers.  Facilitated by Katie Porter, LCSW.

1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month, 5:30 –7:00 p.m.

 

Teen Club Support Group: An ongoing group for young adults between the ages of 13-18 who have a loved one with cancer. The group meets for a different activity every month. Facilitated by Child Life Specialists Rachelle Kroll and Heidi Miner.

3rd Wednesday of the month, 7:00 –8:30 p.m.

 

Kids Klub Support Group:

An ongoing group for children between the ages of 5-12 whose parent, sibling or grandparent has cancer. Facilitated by  child life specialists.

1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month, 5:30–7:00 p.m.

 

Kids Kope:

An ongoing bereavement group for children between the ages of 5-12 who have had a loved one die of cancer. Facilitated by Katrina Cattan, child life specialist.

2nd & 4th Thursday of the month, 5:30 –7:00 p.m.

 

Networking Groups:

 

Young Adult Network:

The challenges of cancer are different for young adults between the ages of 18-40 than older adults. It's a great opportunity to share experiences, exchange information and gain support. 

Light refreshments served. Facilitated by Jessica Drury, LCSW. 4th Monday of the Month, 6:00 –7:00 p.m.

 

Breast Cancer Network:

The challenges of cancer are different for people diagnosed with breast cancer. It's a great opportunity to share experiences, exchange information and gain support.

Light refreshments served. Facilitated by Keri Jones, LCSW. 2nd Thursday  of the Month, 6:30 –7:30 p.m.

 

Colon Cancer Network:

The challenges of cancer are different for people diagnosed with colon cancer. It's a great opportunity to share experiences, exchange information and gain support.

Light refreshments served. Facilitated by Laura Van Hook, LCSW. 3rd Thursday  of the Month, 6:30 –7:30 p.m.

 

Brain Tumor Network:

The challenges of cancer are different for people diagnosed with a brain tumor. It's a great opportunity to share experiences, exchange information and gain support.

Light refreshments served. Facilitated by John Conlee, PhD, LCSW. 4th Thursday of the Month, 6:30 –7:30 p.m.

 

Melanoma Network:

The challenges of cancer are different for people diagnosed with melanoma. It's a great opportunity to share experiences, exchange information and gain support.

Light refreshments served. Facilitated by Mike Flowers, LCSW. 3rd Monday of the Month, 6:30 –7:30 p.m.

 Physical Well-Being:

Yoga:

Actively participate with others in increasing stretching

ability,strengthening the cardiovascular system, centering

mind and body, and mindful breathing.  Stay active, meet

other survivors and family members, and feel better in

body and spirit. Instructor adapts class to beginning

through advanced participants.  Winter yoga by firelight in

back studio.  No sign-up necessary. Facilitated by Danielle

Thorpe. Every Wednesday of the month. Check Calendar

Massage:

Reduce your stress by the soothing touch of a 30min-1hr body massage. Facilitated by licensed massage therapists. Check our calendar for dates, or call the CWH to schedule an appointment.

Therapeutic Touch: A scientifically-based practice that promotes relaxation and a sense of comfort by which the practitioner uses their hands as a focus to facilitate the healing process. Held monthly. Facilitated by Rebecca Good, MA, RNC, ACRN, QTTT, LPC.  3rd Monday of the month, 5:00 –7:00 p.m.

Workshops:

Writing Workshop: "With Clarity Comes Unburdening"

A growing number of health professionals are using creative writing to help people cope with anxiety, depression, and loss. In this workshop series, we will study works of fiction and nonfiction to see how life events can be shaped to make readers care. Then we will write and, in a supportive and no-pressure environment, critique our work. For the ambitious, we will discuss marketing for your work.

Social Groups and Special Events:

Book Club: Come, read and discuss a book of choice with other members who have common experiences. Facilitated by Sue Wurtzburg, PhD. Books provided by the Utah Humanities Council. Held every two months.  Last Monday of the month, 5:30 –6:30 p.m.

Outdoor Club: Held monthly, the Outdoor Club offers fun, easy and challenging activities for its members. Activities range from outdoor hiking to an afternoon at the museum. The 3rd Saturday of every month. Check our calendar for information on activity and time.

Family Events: Activities for families that have been touched by cancer. Events include egg hunts with the Easter Bunny, Halloween Carnival, Christmas Social with Santa and his elves, summer BBQs, and more. Available to all members and their families.

Survivors at the Summit: An inspirational event held each August at Snowbird, Utah, celebrating the courage and determination of those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Join us for free tram rides, hiking, breakfast, raffle, live music, tribute flags and more!

Fundraisers and Special Events: Participate in a variety of special fundraisers for the Cancer Wellness House. Call for upcoming events.
